Stressed to Death.
Our first project in Silas Munro’s Black Data course involved comparing a set of data from previous centuries with current information. I chose to compare the placement of confederate monuments with the maternal mortality rates in the country.
“The answer to the disparity in death rates has everything to do with the lived experience of being a black woman in America”
America’s Black mothers are suffering, and the lingering presence of systemic racism is to blame. Navigating a world that doesn’t accept you simply for the color of your skin can cause a lot of stress. This stress accumulates in the body increasing the individuals allostatic load which can lead to medical complications during birth.
