What does it mean to be a Human Centered Designer?
Human centered design is just that - putting humans at the center of the design process.

“Embracing human centered design means that all problems, even the seemingly intractable ones like poverty, gender equality, and clean water are solvable” - The Field Guide to Human-Centered Design

Designing with humans in mind is incredibly important for the prosperity of the human race. Through the use of design, we have the ability to foster a more welcoming and functioning society.

I think being a human centered designer requires empathy and compassion to fall at the top of an individual’s skillset. The world is full of unique individuals facing unique problems and while making things that look cool serves a purpose, human centered design goes far beyond that. HCD is about dedicating yourself to finding a creative solution to the problem at hand while ensuring humanity is at the utmost importance.

As someone that identifies with a marginalized group, I find human centered design to be extremely important. Through this involved practice, voices can be heard, challenges can be tackled, confidence can be gained and barriers can be broken down. I’m privileged in ways that many others like me are not, and I plan to use my skills and platform to advocate for those who cannot do so for themselves.
